Got a question about teeth whitening? Here are some answers

Whiter Teeth 3 - Blog Header-01

Here at Balsall Common Dental Practice we often see patients who are unhappy about the colour of their teeth. We provide Professional Teeth Whitening using custom made individual whitening trays. During an initial consultation, we do a thorough oral health check and discuss your treatment options. To help you, we have put together the top questions we are asked most frequently by patients who are considering having their teeth whitened.

Dr Ashley Davenport and Dr Catherine Myatt have both been providing teeth whitening  since 1996 and have given many a patient a beautifully brightened up smile. They are both qualified to deliver this treatment due to being qualified Dental Surgeons registered with the General Dental Council for the past 20 years. Here are a few questions that The Drs have answered for us:

Question: Does the treatment hurt?

Dr Catherine Myatt Answers:

“Tooth whitening may cause sensitivity during or after treatment, a sore throat or discomfort in the gums. All of these side effects are usually temporary and will disappear within a few days of treatment. It is important to tell us if you experience any of these symptoms as we will be able to advise how best to cope in the meantime. Here at Balsall Common Dental Practice we offer Professional Teeth Whitening using custom made individual whitening trays.”

Question: Do I really need to avoid coffee and red wine afterwards?

Dr Ashley Davenport Answers:

“Some foods and drinks stain the teeth, which is what causes most of the discoloration in the first place. Avoiding things like coffee and red wine will help you to maintain the effect of the treatment for longer. Stopping smoking will also help prevent your teeth from staining too. It is important to understand that tooth whitening doesn’t last forever but there are things that you can do to keep your healthy white smile in tip top condition. Keeping your oral health at a peak is also helpful, so ensure you brush twice a day, floss regularly and visit your dentist and dental hygienist as often as they recommend. You can book your hygiene appointment by simply calling us on 01676 529000 or by clicking here to use our online booking facility.”

Question: Why cant I get it done at my local beautician?

Dr Catherine Myatt Answers:

Tooth whitening can only be carried out by a dentist – or a dental hygienist under prescription from a dentist.

“Tooth whitening can only be carried out by a dentist – or a dental hygienist under prescription of a dentist – who is registered with the General Dental Council.  It is illegal for anyone else to offer tooth whitening and this law is in place purely to protect the public.  Would you ask your dentist to carry out a leg or bikini wax before you jet off on holiday?  Hopefully the answer to that is no, because they are not trained to correctly heat the wax, apply it, or carry out the treatment safely. The same goes for tooth whitening.  Here at Balsall Common Dental Practice our team members we have the right training and knowledge to properly look after your teeth and to know whether whitening treatment is actually suitable for you and to carry it out without damaging your teeth or gums.”
