Why is gum health important?
The gums are the foundation for healthy teeth and a beautiful smile. Infection of the gum tissue with bacteria found in plaque and tartar is a major cause of dental issues. Advanced forms of gum disease may lead to bone loss and tooth loss. Periodontal disease also predisposes people to medical condition such as dementia, diabetes and heart disease.
Healthy gums are firm and pink in color. Bleeding gums when you brush your teeth is a sign of gum disease. Bleeding and inflammation of the gums are signs of gingivitis and periodontitis.
What affects gum health?
People who smoke and take alcohol are at the greatest risk of gum disease. Other risk factors are poor nutrition, poor oral hygiene and stress. Plaque will immediately begin to accumulate on the surfaces of your teeth immediately after brushing. Failure to brush your teeth to remove plaque will allow it to calcify and get below the gum line. The gum tissue will get inflamed and start to bleed as a result of the immune system kicking in to fight the plaque bacteria.
Ways of maintaining healthy gums
Good oral hygiene is the best defense against gum disease. Brush your teeth twice every day, floss routinely, and rinse out the mouth regularly to prevent plaque from forming. Ensure that you are flossing the area just below the gum line to get rid of plaque and food debris. Toothbrushes do not easily reach the areas below the gum line.
Finally, do not forget the routine visits to the dentist for checkups. These visits should be scheduled every six months. However, people at the greatest risk — such as smokers and orthodontic patients — should have teeth cleaned and checked every three months.
